10 Amazing Things That Never Existed

It’s not uncommon for a person to look back on their life and imagine how things could have been different. If only they had done this instead of that. But of course, this is always just an exercise in reflection. We can never go back again. Some things never happened, and we have to live with that. But you might be surprised to learn that, beyond your personal choices, the world is full of events that sound like they should have happened; they should have happened at least once, and yet they never did. Here are 10 things you might be surprised to learn simply didn’t happen. At least not yet…

10. No one knows how wild eels reproduce.

In the world there are about 800 species of eels , although most of us can probably name only a few off the top of our heads. They're not as popular a seafood treat as they once were, but you can still get unagi at a Japanese restaurant, and even lamprey pie if you look hard enough. There are plenty of eels to go around. But where do they come from?

Obviously, eels are fish, obviously they mate and reproduce, give birth to baby eels, and the world goes on turning. Obviously. But have you ever seen eels breeding in a river or the sea? You haven’t, and you’re not alone. Nobody saw it. We didn't even find the egg before.

We know eels don't have weird, sci-fi mating habits because they can be bred in captivity, although it's not the easiest thing to do. But scientists have never observed it in their natural habitat. The fact that their lives seem to have begun somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle certainly adds to the mystery.

For eels were watching , swimming hundreds and hundreds of miles from fresh water to the open sea. But they are the final destination, and their true spawning grounds remain elusive.

9. No one has ever been arrested for a crime on Tristan da Cunha.

Tristan da Cunha is an island that most of us have probably never heard of and will never visit. It is the most remote inhabited island in the world. Supply boats arrive a couple of times a year and the population is about 250. It is also almost completely crime-free. As of 2010 Police Inspector Conrad Glass for 22 years actually did not arrest anyone.

There are only six family names on the entire island, so everyone is either related to someone or at least knows their family. And while the island was looking for a new police force in 2019, they said crime “was low.” Glass acknowledged there were problems, but they were between people who knew each other, and his job was mostly to reassure people.

For its 2019 job posting, the island appeared to want an officer supported the community , and not someone who was cracking down on crime, which, again, doesn't seem to exist there in any meaningful way.

According to Glass, the last time the jail cell was used was in the 1970s, before he was an officer. There was a stabbing on a fishing boat, meaning a crime that happened 30 or 40 years ago hasn't actually happened yet. on island.

8. The Haunted House at McKamey Manor has never been finished.

When Halloween season rolls around, haunted houses start popping up again to keep people in the spirit of the season. And while you can still find some very tame haunted houses, extreme horror fans always want more and better, and this has led to some incredibly over-the-top horror experiences. None are as infamous as the McKamey Manor Haunted House. Over the years, 40,000 eager horror fans have flocked to the house. Not a single person has ever finished their experience, despite an offer of $20,000 for anyone who can.

To understand why the McKamey estate was so impossible to beat, you can check out some YouTube videos about it. Mostly it was voluntary torture. People carried out eight hours on the spot , locked in cages, waterboarded, assaulted, terrorized, etc. Nothing they technically agreed to, of course. (However, some The participants claim that that they didn't agree with everything that happened, and accused McKamey of assault and much more.) Russ McCamey himself claims that he does not torture anyone and that such things as water torture do not exist.

Participants had to sign mass waivers and take drug tests. However, no one ever finished.

7. No one has ever climbed Gangkhar Puensum

Near 4000 people climbed Everest. Less than 400 people reached the summit of K2. Thousands of other climbers have conquered hundreds of other peaks. Some are even climbed by truly adventurous daredevils. Despite this, there are actually hundreds of mountains , which no one has ever climbed. The highest of them is Gangkhar Puensum. It is the highest mountain in Bhutan 7,570 meters or 24,836 feet. That makes it about 1,000 meters shorter than K2. So why hasn't anyone climbed it? They can't.

Butane does not allow Mountaineering. You are allowed to climb shorter peaks in the country, but anything above 6,000 meters is prohibited. There have been attempts to climb the mountain in the past, but no one has managed to reach the top. Since the law has been in place since 1994, the Bhutanese government needs to change its mind if anyone is going to have a chance to climb the mountain in the future.

6. No one has ever bowled a perfect candle.

If you're not a big bowling fan, you may not know about candlepin bowling. It's very similar to standard 10-pin bowling, but the main difference is the pins. In candlepin bowling, these are long, thin pins, like a candle. The ball used is also smaller, and the pins don't get knocked down when they're knocked down. This presents a big challenge for bowlers. So great, in fact, that No one has ever bowled perfectly . And this despite the fact that the game was invented in the 1880s.

In traditional bowling, a perfect game is 300 points, and that applies to candlestick as well. But in candelabrum, the current record is 245 points . Chris Sargeant had been a professional bowler for 20 years when he achieved this result. Before that, he averaged around 125 per game. His achievement actually tied him up with the previous record holder, and more than a decade later, this result still seems to be considered the best in the world.

5. No one claimed ownership of Mary Byrd's land.

Land is one of those commodities that you can't just find anywhere. There isn't much space that hasn't been claimed, and even land that hasn't been laid before is technically still owned by the government of the country it's in. Except for one place in the world where no one has laid claim to anything. . That's Marie Byrd Land , and you can find it in Antarctica.

Antarctica is governed by an international treaty in which many countries have agreed to claim tracts of land for scientific research. There are no armed forces there, and it is largely a cooperative. But Marie Byrd Land remains unclaimed. It has been set aside for the United States; an American discovered it first, and they once had a research base there. But the base was abandoned due to the inhospitable climate, and any claims have never been ratified by the Antarctic Treaty, meaning it belongs to no one.

4. We still don't know why cats purr

A defining characteristic of cats is their ability to purr. Even some big cats make sounds similar to purring, making something like a lion a little more relatable. And for years, science couldn't figure out how cats made the sound in the first place, though we've now determined that it involves the expansion and contraction of muscles near the cat's larynx, which allow the sound to occur during breathing. And while it's great to know how a cat purrs, we still don't know why.

The urge to say that cats purr to express satisfaction is pretty obvious. When you pet your cat, it probably purrs, so it seems logical. But research has shown that something more complex must be going on.

Kittens purr at an early age, and this can be interpreted by the mother cat as a sign that the baby is okay. As mentioned, a happy cat purrs when you pet her. But a cat may also purr when she is injured and is in pain Cats have been observed to purr when they die.

Studies have shown that cats can also purr on their own when alone and unnoticed on camera. Fear and stress also seem to be triggers for purring, so the purpose of the action is clearly not as simple as we thought.

3. Wild naked mole rats do not get cancer.

Naked mole rats are weird, and their name alone tells you so. While they do have a strange appearance, one of the most remarkable things about them is that in the wild, naked mole rats do not get cancer .

In fact, the only time cancer has been detected in a naked mole rat was in a laboratory setting when it was raised in an atypical environment with higher than normal oxygen levels It has been suggested that this led to cancer.

2. A mobile phone has never caused a gas station fire.

If you've ever stopped for gas in the last 20 years, you've probably noticed the same warning signs at every gas station. Some use a man on a phone, some just show the phone itself, and some specifically explain that you shouldn't use your cell phone while pumping gas because your phone could cause an explosion.

Those with more detailed warnings will tell you that sparks near the gas pump can ignite the vapors. And, frankly, sparks can ignite gasoline vapors. But since when does your cell phone shoot sparks?

National Fire Protection Association requires these stickers because there is a chance that your mobile phone could cause a fire. Remember those stories about people's phones spontaneously catching fire ? There is still a chance that it could happen. And since there is a chance, you should not use the phone.

In fact, this chance is the only reason for a ban. Not a single fire at the gas station never started because of someone's phone. In recent years other security agencies reassessed the risk and determined that there was really no reason to hide your phone because the risk was so low.

1. No one has ever scored a one-point safety in NFL history.

If you have any basic understanding of how American football works, you probably know about the scoring structure. A touchdown is worth six points, with an extra-point kick for seven or a potential two-point conversion to make it eight. You can also kick a field goal for three points. Much less well known is the one-point safety.

The concept of a safety is not that uncommon. If a player gets tackled in his end zone, it is called a safety and is worth two points. They happen from time to time. But this is a two-point safety. One-point safe so rare that it has never happened in NFL history.

For a one-point safety to occur, a lot has to go wrong. After a touchdown, a team must make an extra attempt to score. This is usually for a one-point conversion or a two-point conversion. To make a one-point safety, the team trying to get that extra point must somehow get into its own end zone, move away almost 100 yards across the field and then get tackled by the other team while they're there. There's really no logical reason for this to happen, which probably explains why it didn't happen.
