10 Most Interesting Pranks Created to Promote Movies

Promoting a new film is no easy task. You have to surround the viewer with information from all sides with the help of a massive advertising campaign, interesting trailers, attracting celebrities and other methods.

But some producers go even further and use clever or scary pranks to attract a wider audience.

We present you the top 10 most interesting and memorable pranks used to promote various films.

10. Calls

When you go to a home appliance store to pick out a new TV, you probably don't expect the image on the screen to come to life. Literally.

But that's exactly what the authors of this movie prank did, dressing up one of the actresses as the creepy heroine of the 2017 film "Rings". And if this horror film about Samara Morgan's cursed tape was poorly rated by viewers, becoming the worst in the trilogy, then the prank was much more successful.

9. Geostorm

This 2017 film wasn't the breakout hit of the year, but it does have some truly jaw-dropping scenes. These include boulder-sized hailstones, skyscrapers toppling like dominoes, a terrifying tsunami hitting Dubai, and people freezing to death in the desert.

And to make sure that people actually felt the echoes of the same horror as the characters in Geostorm, the creatives at Warner Bros. Pictures came up with an original move. They froze an entire New York street (not for real, of course), installing mannequins of frozen people and animals on it.

And it was along this street that the fake taxi was taking passengers. At this time, fake news about natural disasters that had suddenly struck the Earth were being played inside the car, and supposedly frozen birds were falling on the car from above.

8. Carrie

To promote the 2013 remake of the classic horror film Carrie, the film crew scared customers at a New York City cafe.

Using props and a remote control, the advertisers made it look like the girl used her mental powers to get revenge on the guy who spilled her coffee. She allegedly threw him into the wall with telekinesis and then started smashing the cafe, moving tables and chairs without using her hands and screaming, tearing things off the walls. Can you imagine how the people present felt?

7. One less

But this joke could have ended very badly for both the actors and the audience if one of them had a weak heart.

To promote the Blu-Ray release of the 2012 box office thriller One Down, the team rigged a New York elevator with hidden cameras and asked a male actor to pretend to strangle another guy. Some of the prank victims screamed in horror, some tried to help, and others pretended not to notice before walking away.

If you really want to lose faith in humanity, please watch the guy at 1:35. He calmly takes out his camera phone to take a picture.

6. Curse of Chucky

As if the story of a killer doll wasn't creepy enough on its own, the PR people decided to tickle potential viewers' nerves with a prank to promote the film.

The team hid a guy dressed as Chucky behind a movie poster at a bus stop in Brazil. While people were waiting for their transport, the fake Chucky burst through the glass and stalked unsuspecting victims with a knife in his hand. It's pretty extreme in terms of a joke, but quite a memorable sight.

5. Sharknado

It's a 5-movie franchise that everyone loves to hate because of the terrible special effects, crappy dialogue, and weird-looking sharks in an incredibly fake tornado.

Luckily, there is an interesting prank that at least partly compensates for the extreme wretchedness of this movie.

For the second part of Sharknado, the English channel Syfy decided to place an animatronic shark in a fish shop. And hidden cameras captured the reaction of customers when the shark came to life right next to them.

4. The Coming of the Devil

This 2014 horror film about a woman pregnant with the Antichrist may have bombed with audiences, but it did serve as the basis for a diabolical joke.

Imagine this: you are walking down the street when you suddenly notice a stroller rolling by itself and hear a baby crying. Driven by a feeling of concern for the baby left unattended, you approach the stroller, pull back its sun visor and see... something like a Gollum cub, with a face distorted with anger and eyes without whites.

And it can also splash you with vomit (or rather, with a composition that its creators wanted to pass off as vomit). I don’t know about you, dear readers, but my heart would sink into my heels.

3. The Conjuring 2

A common scene in many horror films is where the main character, "to wake himself up from a nightmare," splashes water on his face and then looks in the mirror. Sometimes the hero opens a bathroom cabinet, and when he closes it again, another face appears in the mirror on the door, or a figure is visible directly behind the character.

To promote The Conjuring 2, a prank was created that involved using a two-way mirror to show unsuspecting bathroom users an image of a creepy nun. Then another actress would act out the otherworldly creature emerging from the mirror.

2. Paranormal Activity: Ghosts in 3D

The success of the first Paranormal Activity spawned numerous sequels, including 2015's The Haunting 3D.

To create hype for its release, a hidden camera was installed in the original house used for the first film. The house was supposedly put up for sale, and during the open house, potential buyers got more than they bargained for. Let's just say: welcome to the ghost dimension!

1. It

A list of the best movie commercial pranks would be incomplete without mentioning one of the scariest horror films of all time.

When the movie It opened at Prime Cinemas in Bolivia, the theater's managers decided to advertise the horror film in an original way. They assigned an employee to dress up as a creepy clown and scare people.

Although this made-up clown looks more like Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise than Pennywise, he still managed to tickle a few people's nerves.
