If you're a dog owner, chances are you know your pet inside out.
You know all about their favorite toys, their favorite sleeping spots, their favorite snacks—you're a walking encyclopedia filled with knowledge about your pet.
But the funniest thing about pets is that they can always find a way to surprise you - there's always a new experience waiting to capture their excitement, whether it's their first glimpse of sand or snow, their fascination with a shiny new toy, or just the joy of meeting another new canine friend for the first time.
With that in mind, these are just five basic facts that all dog owners should know, but many don't!
1. They are better communicators than we think.
The average dog probably knows up to 100 words, such as "fetch," "sit," and hopefully "no," although some dogs perceive the latter with a degree of selective hearing.
Of course, the way dogs understand language is very different from the way humans do – they can’t understand abstract concepts, but you can bet that the word “walk” will make their tails wag with joy!
2. They can eat a lot of human food.
Do you often feel stares when you're having dinner? Or see little noses sniffing around?
There are some human foods that are simply not meant for dogs to eat, so you shouldn't feel bad about saying "no" to your pooch - chocolate is the biggest no-no, as are most processed sweets and snacks.
However, the occasional human treat can actually be good for your pet, in moderation—foods like chicken and fish, plain white rice, and even carrots and strawberries!
If you are ever in doubt, always consult your veterinarian before feeding your furry friend any of these foods.
3. They can also cause allergies.
It's hard to see your dog sick, and the hardest part is that he can't tell you what's wrong.
And unfortunately, if they are often exposed to bad weather, it could be due to allergies. Dogs can be allergic to certain foods, pollen, and other environmental factors, just like humans!
If you think your dog may have allergies, you can ask your vet to provide a sample to an allergen specialist. Early detection of these conditions can help you prevent them from coming into contact with irritants and treat reactions as soon as possible.
4. Dogs are tuned into our emotions
It may not surprise you, but dogs are incredibly intuitive about our emotions. They can tell when we are stressed, when we are sad, and even when we are sick.
You may notice that your dog becomes very cuddly when you are a little upset. Or perhaps they don't have as much energy as usual and aren't as excited about walks or toys.
However, spending some time with your pooch can lift both of your spirits in no time.
5. They can benefit your health!
Dogs need regular walks, and that's great news for your own exercise! It's one of the reasons so many new owners have adopted from confinement - with a dog, you have no excuse not to get out and move!
But beyond the positive changes they bring to your daily routine, dog owners benefit both mentally and physically from interacting with their dogs. Cuddling with your dog can reduce stress, anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate!
These are just five fantastic facts about dogs that all dog owners should know.
