8 Effective Rules for Learning English

The most popular language to learn is English, as it is international and can unite people from all over the world. Each language has its own rules - it is not enough to simply memorize words and set expressions (of course, this is also important), special attention should be paid to grammar, syntactic rules, speech patterns, etc.

For beginners and those who are already familiar with the basics of effective English learning, the rules are different, but we tried to combine them together. We hope that the article will be useful for both the first and second categories of people.

Rule #1: Learn the alphabet and memorize individual phrases

English-alphabetIt is difficult to imagine learning English without knowing the alphabet. First, remember how the letters sound: for example, A is ei, similar to the Russian "hey", and B is bi, pronounced as "bi". Also remember how small and large letters look. After that, you can move on to the next stage.

There are set expressions in English, for example, come home, which means to be at home. Memorize phrases, not individual words, it is much more effective, words are remembered faster in context. According to the works of some researchers, learning English by memorizing phrases increases the speed of its acquisition by 5 times!

Rule #2: Learn grammar

dbgsu42pYou can't master English without grammar rules. To do this, you need to choose good textbooks designed for beginners.

We recommend the following books:

  1. Grammar. Collection of exercises edited by Golitsynsky Yu. B.
  2. Practical English grammar with exercises and keys edited by Kachalova K. N.

These books, according to teachers, will help students lay a solid foundation that will help them learn English in the future. The publications contain theoretical and practical aspects - after studying the rules, you will consolidate them by doing easy exercises. Regular classes will help you master the grammatical structures of a foreign language over time.

At first, you may not understand why English phrases are translated “wrongly.” In fact, for the English, everything is like that, but we translate words as it is more convenient for us. The English think the same thing when translating English words “strangely” into Russian. You can read about this, as well as other important grammar points, in textbooks for beginners.

Rule #3: Listen and remember

aa4e0mgaSchools and colleges emphasize memorizing words and mastering grammar, but if you only read English words without hearing them pronounced, you will never master English. You simply won’t be able to catch most of a foreigner’s words. So our advice is to listen to audio instead of reading text. Or better yet, both together!

Best YouTube Channels for Learning English:

  • Learn English With Misterduncan - English subtitles make learning the language easier, each video is about 7 minutes long;
  • English from films - on this channel you can read subtitles, listen to how they sound, and remember the translation;
  • English. Double subtitles. - on this channel you will know how phrases sound in English and look in writing, and also remember the translation of words.

Advice: To make the process of learning English easier and more fun, choose a YouTube channel with a topic that interests you. Maybe you are into cooking or movies? Great, then look for such channels.

Rule #4: Put it away in your subconscious

ixmwsek5Many people make one mistake - they write out words in a column and then repeat them to memorize them. This is the wrong approach - like memorizing the multiplication table, but not knowing why 5x5=25. Learning words is not enough, it is important to know how to use them. Most phrases have a different meaning than the individual words they may consist of.

The secret to easy and fluent mastery of spoken English is to deeply memorize words in phrases. They should be embedded in your subconscious. Repeated repetition of lessons, texts, audio will allow you to speak English freely and easily in the future. Focus not on the speed of learning, but on quality.

Advice: Returning to rule #6, I would like to add - watch one video on YouTube several times until you have a clear understanding of why the phrase is translated this way and not another. Grammar textbooks from point 7 will help you with this understanding.

Rule #5: Master the tenses in the language

qmp2jvn2It is worth starting with the present simple. We know about 3 tenses: present, past, future, but in English there are 12 of them. Questions about tenses will automatically disappear when you master the basic rules for constructing tense forms and learn to automatically determine which group a situation belongs to.

Examples of present simple:

  • he works at the factory;
  • it snows a lot in winter;
  • Julia is an artist. She draws very beautiful pictures.

First of all, master the present simple tense when something is stated: "he does", "the drink is invigorating", "it has been snowing for the second day", etc. Remember - interrogative and negative sentences are constructed differently - pay special attention to this. Having analyzed all these nuances, you can move on to the next stage.

Rule #6: Listen and Respond

13vgwwmjMost video and audio lessons are designed so that students listen and remember - this is good at the initial stage, but we need to move forward. If you do not have a live foreign interlocutor - no problem, he can be replaced by a speaker from the video material. Just press pause on the video and answer him in the same time phrase.

For example, if you are asked the question: "Do you speak English?" pause and answer: "Yes, I do. I speak English." All teachers advise: "More practice," and they are right. Only by practicing, speaking, memorizing, can you advance in mastering English.

Advice: Be sure to use this rule - it almost completely compensates for real practice with a live interlocutor. Apply it in each of your lessons.

Rule #7: Take a holistic approach

c3q0pzaoIt is not enough to just memorize words or read them in English. If you are serious about mastering the language, then a comprehensive approach to learning is necessary.

The integrated approach includes:

  • Listening - exercises, video and audio materials;
  • Reading - exercises and texts;
  • Grammar - memorizing the rules;
  • Speaking - independent exercises;
  • Writing - independent exercises.

Don't try to learn complicated words like "superficial", "falsification", etc., remember how to translate basic phrases on which initial communication is built. Such words include: "How are you?" (how are you?), "It's cold today", etc. It is recommended to remember set expressions.

If you find yourself in an unfamiliar country and have to ask someone: "Where is the hotel located?" you won't look for how to translate each word - the sentence may be constructed incorrectly. It is better to memorize phrases in advance that may be useful to you in everyday life. By the way, "Where is the hotel located?" is translated as "Where is the hotel situated?" Now you have one set phrase!

Rule #8: Exercise regularly

tb4alfz1This point could not but complete the list of rules. Perhaps you think that the rule is not so important, but, as practice shows, the more often a person studies, speaks English, does exercises, the more effectively his training goes and, of course, he shows good results faster.

Remember how we learned to speak as children. At first, we heard incomprehensible words, gradually repeated them, memorized them, learned to build phrases and communicate. Now we speak so well and understand each other only thanks to regular practice. If you want to study a language for years, you can study English whenever you want.

But if you want to achieve good results, get used to regular English lessons for at least 30-40 minutes a day. Over time, you will praise yourself for the efforts you have made.

Advice: Psychologists advise rewarding yourself for your work — this way, you will be more motivated to do something. After your English lessons, do something that brings you pleasure: watch a TV show, draw, or just surf the Internet. When you skip lessons — scold yourself and don’t spoil yourself. This way, you will teach yourself discipline, and it is very important when you want to achieve something.
