When you think of the lowest points on earth, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they’re all underwater, but that’s not true at all, and some of them are simply beautiful places that attract thousands of tourists all year round. You may not have heard of many of these places, but we guarantee that you’ve heard of at least one of them…
Dead Sea
The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 423 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth on dry land.
Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Galilee, also Kinneret, Lake Gennesaret or Lake Tiberias, is the largest freshwater lake in Israel, with a circumference of approximately 53 km, a length of about 21 km and a width of 13 km.
Lake Assal
Lake Assal is a crater lake in central-western Djibouti. It is located at the western end of the Gulf of Tadjoura in the Tadjoura Region, adjacent to the Dikhil Region, at the head of the Great Rift Valley, about 120 km west of Djibouti City.
Turpan Depressions
The Turpan Depression or Turpan Basin is a fault-bounded trench located around and south of the oasis city of Turpan, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in far western China, about 150 km southeast of the regional capital Urumqi.
Qattara Depression
The Qattara Depression is a depression in northwestern Egypt in the Matrouh Governorate, part of the Libyan Desert. It is located below sea level and is covered with salt marshes, sand dunes, and saline flats.
Mangyshlak Peninsula
Mangyshlak or the Mangyshlak Peninsula is located in the western part of Kazakhstan. It borders the Caspian Sea to the north and west. Administratively, the peninsula is part of the Mangistau Region of Kazakhstan.
Danakil
The Danakil Desert is located in the Afar Triangle, which extends across northeastern Ethiopia, southern Eritrea and northwestern Djibouti.
Laguna del Carbon
Laguna del Carbón is a salt lake in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. This salt lake is located 54 km from Puerto San Julian, in the Gran Bajo de San Julian, an endorheic basin located between San Julian Bay and the Chico River.
Death Valley
Death Valley is a desert valley located in eastern California. Situated in the Mojave Desert, it is the lowest, hottest, and driest region in North America.
Akjak Depression
The Akchanaya Depression is part of the Akjakoy Basin in northern Turkmenistan. It measures 81 metres (266 ft) below sea level. This arid region is located in the Dashoguz Region (or province), within the border of the Karakum Desert. The nearest large city is Dashoguz (or Dashoguz) to the east, and the border of western Uzbekistan curves sharply to the north.
