How to Choose Safe Christmas Tree Toys for the New Year 2025

Some Christmas tree decorations can be dangerous, both due to the materials and the quality of the workmanship.

To ensure that the New Year remains not only a joyful but also a safe holiday for you, I will share some recommendations on choosing Christmas tree decorations.

7. Eco-toys – stylish, fashionable, safe

Eco-friendliness is a fashionable trend these days, and even the toy industry follows it. And this is good, because in addition to safety, such toys create a feeling of coziness and closeness to nature.

These decorations are made from wood, textiles, dough, clay, dried fruits, dried flowers, paper, foil and even cinnamon, chili peppers and citrus fruits dried in the oven. You can make these toys yourself, there are many videos on this topic on YouTube.

And don't forget about a stunning tree skirt, which naturally draws attention to the bottom of the tree and helps create a finished, harmonious look. Plus, it will protect your floors from needles if you're decorating a real tree or pine.

6. Smell the Christmas tree decoration before buying it

A quality New Year's toy should not emit foreign odors. It can "smell" if the paint and (or) materials are the cheapest, with harmful substances such as formaldehyde and lead. They can cause skin irritation, poisoning or accumulate in the body.

5. Fabric tapes or beads on glue are dangerous

The composition of the glue used to create cheap Christmas tree decorations is often unsafe (it contains acetone, phenol, dichloroethane, etc.). When gluing, these substances can be released into the environment. And beads from such glue easily come off and can end up in the mouth, nose, or ear of a child.

You can glue decorative ribbons to the Christmas tree yourself, choosing a safe glue (for example, Kores Eco Universal Glue or any other, the quality of which you are confident). You can use one ribbon or a pair of ribbons of contrasting texture and different widths.

4. Perform the palm-napkin test

Before buying, you can carefully wipe the toy with a napkin or your palm. If there are traces of paint or glitter left, you should not buy the toy.

3. The power and thickness of the Christmas tree garland matter

If you buy a garland to decorate a Christmas tree or a room, then 50 watts is sufficient power. For an outdoor garland, you need more power - 60 watts. More is not needed, otherwise the risk of overheating and even fire increases.

The wires of the garland should be copper and thick - the thicker, the better. And without unnecessary tinsel, which can quickly ignite. The minimum permissible cross-section of the garland wire is 0.5 square millimeters, and the wire itself must have high-quality, flexible and dense insulation.

However, inexpensive Chinese garlands rarely meet these requirements. Therefore, it is better to take domestic products.

Before purchasing, ask to turn on the garland and observe whether an unpleasant smell of plastic or burning appears after a couple of minutes.

A garland bought in a store should not be plugged into the power supply at home straight from the cold. Let it warm up for at least half an hour.

Important: LED garlands are safer than lamp ones because they are powered by low voltage, not the mains. An external battery is enough for them.

2. Plastic is better than glass or ceramics

Mom, let me just have a look, I'll be careful! Bam - and a fragile glass toy is lying on the floor in the form of small fragments. Do you need this? That's why plastic toys are better. They are cheaper than glass, and especially ceramic ones. And the huge variety of shapes, colors and decor of plastic ornaments allows you to decorate the tree in a new way at least every year.

If you can't do without a glass or ceramic toy, hang it higher, where playful children's hands can't reach it. To add zest and visual appeal to the New Year tree, you can combine three decorations of different sizes - it doesn't matter whether they are the same color or contrasting.

1. What Christmas toys are not suitable for small children

Many parents think that their children are very smart for their age, and therefore can play with Christmas tree decorations. This is not true. The age range of toys is determined based on safety factors, not the child's intelligence.

  • Avoid balls and other Christmas tree decorations less than 5 centimeters in diameter, as they can get stuck in the throat and interfere with normal breathing.
  • The toy should not have sharp edges or small parts such as eyes, wheels or buttons that could come off and get into the child's mouth or nose.
  • The toy must not have ribbons, strings or cords longer than 18 centimeters (otherwise there is a risk of strangulation).
  • Tinsel and tinsel are not the best choice for families with small children and pets. Small parts break off too easily and can be swallowed by a child or pet.
