Few things are as frustrating for passengers as a delayed flight. Sitting on hard seats in the waiting room for a few more hours, knowing that somewhere in the distance a holiday dinner is getting cold or an important meeting is taking place – you wouldn’t wish that on your worst enemy.
However, with the new airline punctuality ratings 2020, prepared by the international airport "Gagarin", such incidents are no longer scary for you - just choose the top positions from the list!
How the rating was compiled
Airport experts decided to divide airlines into two parts depending on the frequency of flights - daily and those that did not fly their planes very often. And since international flights were not sent from Saratov Airport due to the pandemic, no rating was compiled for them. Aircraft statistics were taken into account for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2020.
Airlines that delayed their flights by 15 minutes or more were considered "late". However, deviations from the schedule that occurred due to reasons beyond human control - weather conditions - were not included in the statistics.
The most punctual airlines in Russia with regular flights
5. Nordwind Airlines
This company operates (or operated before the pandemic) both local and international flights. However, its punctuality is not as high as we would like – only 82.1% flights departed on time.
But this is not surprising - in 2019, Rosaviatsia banned Severny Veter from flying further than an hour from alternate airfields. This was justified by the insufficient technical training of the company's pilots and their general overload, which, as is known, can negatively affect their performance.
4. Iraero
The Siberian company IrAero is slightly ahead of the "northerners" - its planes depart and arrive with 82.9% punctuality. The company flies mainly within Russia, a little to our closest neighbors, and also to China.
Overall, the airline is in good standing, nothing particularly bad can be said about it. There was perhaps a minor incident in 2011, but passengers only received minor injuries.
3. UTair
This name covers more than just passenger and cargo transportation. The UTair airline includes many subsidiaries that are responsible for transporting people and cargo throughout Russia, the near and far abroad. According to company representatives, UTair boasts the largest helicopter fleet throughout Russia, and ranks sixth in terms of passenger traffic.
True, not everything in the company's history was so cloudless, and in 2019 it was even threatened with bankruptcy. The problem of how to keep the holding's planes in the sky had to be solved at the state level - Utair is included in the list of systemically important companies in Russia.
Be that as it may, in 2020 it entered the list of the most punctual air carriers in Russia, its flights take off and land very precisely in 88% cases.
2. Azimuth
In second place in terms of punctuality is a relatively small airline whose base is located in the south of Russia (in Rostov-on-Don and Krasnodar).
It was created quite recently, in 2017, to cover air routes between the southern cities of Russia, as well as the two capitals - Moscow and St. Petersburg. It sends its flights with 88.9% accuracy.
1. Red Wings
The first place among the most accurate airlines that do not send their aircraft from the Gagarin airport in Saratov every day goes to the air carrier with the patriotic name "Red Wings". Its flights depart with an impressive accuracy of 97.6%.
The company was founded about 20 years ago and is based at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport, from where it sends its aircraft to 17 destinations. In recent years, Red Wings has been expanding, for example, last year, despite the pandemic and the difficulties it caused, the company created a base at Yekaterinburg Airport. Red Wings management also announced that it plans to increase the number of aircraft.
The most punctual Russian air carriers with daily flights
3. Victory
Although Pobeda is part of the same aviation holding as Aeroflot, which took the honorable first place, the low-cost airline is not as punctual as its older "relative". Pobeda flights can boast only 88.6% accuracy.
The pandemic has crippled budget airlines, and Pobeda has suffered as well. Its planes were forced to sit idle in hangars for about two months – from early April to late May, the company did not operate any flights at all. In the summer, it began flying within Russia, and in September, in order to catch a bit of the holiday season, it began flying to Turkey.
In addition to the accuracy of departures and arrivals, Pobeda is famous for the efficiency of its managers, who, in order to maximize revenues and reduce expenses, introduced downright draconian restrictions for passengers. For example, they kept tightening the requirements for hand luggage, kept reducing the permissible dimensions, until the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Moscow Office of Rospotrebnadzor intervened.
And the Airline's CEO, Andrey Kalmykov, loves to paint a phallic symbol in the sky with his planes. Yes, yes. We are not joking. In November 2020, Rosaviatsia conducted an inspection of the aircraft's suspicious trajectory in the azure blue, and it turned out that the pilots painted this very thing with the knowledge of the head of the company. In general, it is even surprising how Pobeda achieved 88.6% accuracy.
2. S7 Airlines/Siberia
The top 3 most punctual major airlines in Russia in 2020 included Siberia, which managed to achieve an impressive accuracy of 95%. S7 Airlines is only slightly behind its eternal rival, Aeroflot.
Siberia (the legal name of the organization) is no stranger to winning awards for timeliness – it was already among the top 10 most punctual air carriers according to the Punctuality League in 2019.
Various ratings and respect for the needs of customers are noted by Siberia; the company has repeatedly received awards for its service and for its customer-friendly loyalty program.
1. Aeroflot
This is not only the most punctual, but also the oldest Russian airline, whose roots go back to the 1930s. Aeroflot flights departed with 95.6% accuracy.
However, accuracy is accuracy, but Aeroflot's attitude towards customers is not so smooth. This company refused to refund money for tickets sold before the borders were closed. At first, it made excuses that it would only refund money for the most "urgent" tickets, and then it directly refused to do so - they say that the pandemic is not included in the list of "force majeure".
At the same time, you can’t even complain to your friends on VKontakte or Facebook about the company’s policies. If Aeroflot employees monitoring social networks notice that you criticize the company, you can be deprived of bonus miles and even a platinum card, if you have one.
