Ferris wheels come in a variety of sizes and can be found in many locations, including amusement parks and tourist attractions. Below are the top 10 tallest Ferris wheels in the world.
10. Melbourne Star and 5 other attractions – 120 meters
The spokes of this massive Ferris wheel form a seven-pointed star, a nod to the Australian flag. A ride on the Melbourne Star will give you 30-minute views of the Docklands and nearby areas of the city, such as Port Phillip and the CBD.
There are several other Ferris wheels that are 120 meters high:
- The Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel opened in 2003 at an amusement park in Henan Province, China.
- The Changsha Ferris Wheel opened in 2004 in Changsha, China.
- Tianjin Eye is an amusement park attraction that opened in 2008 in Tianjin, China.
- The Suzhou Ferris Wheel opened in 2009 in Suzhou, China.
9. Orlando's Eye - 122 meters
The tallest ride on the East Coast opened in 2015 and offers spectacular views of the city's theme parks, including nearby SeaWorld Orlando and Universal Orlando.
One rotation of the wheel takes 23 minutes. Before boarding the cabin, visitors will be shown a mini-film about the construction of the wheel. And when exiting the wheel, riders are offered a free can of Coca-Cola.
8. Red Horse – 123 meters
The tallest Ferris wheel in Japan opened in 2016. It rises to a height comparable to the height of a 40-story residential building. For comparison: the highest point of the tallest Ferris wheel in Russia is 83 meters (or 28 floors).
All 72 passenger cabins have transparent (and very durable) floors. And during the 18 minutes it takes the wheel to make a full rotation, its visitors can admire impressive views of the city from the side windows and from below, if, of course, they dare to look at their feet.
7. Heavenly Dream – 126 meters
This is a Taiwanese attraction, but it is Japanese by birthright. This giant Ferris wheel, built in 2001, was originally located in Fukuoka, Japan. In 2009, it was closed, dismantled and sent to Taiwan, to a park in Taichung City. The attraction was reconstructed from 2014 to 2017.
One lap of the Sky Dream takes 28 minutes. During the coronavirus pandemic, the wheel was idle. But now, judging by the video from 2023, it is working again.
6. London Eye – 135 meters
One of England's most recognisable landmarks has made it into the top ten tallest rides of 2023.
Europe's tallest attraction was built in 2000 and was originally called the Millennium Wheel. Each of its 32 capsules can carry 25 passengers, and the entire ride takes about 30 minutes.
More people visit the London Eye each year than the Taj Mahal or the Great Pyramids of Giza.
5. Bailang River Ferris Wheel – 145 meters
This ride features 36 carriages, each of which can accommodate 10 people, and even boasts Wi-Fi and individual TVs in each carriage if you get tired of looking at the magnificent view of the Bailang River.
This design proudly bears the title of the world's largest Ferris wheel without spokes. The body of the attraction does not rotate, instead the cabins rotate in a circle.
The team behind the project has high hopes for their creation, stating: "We sincerely hope that this Ferris wheel will become an architectural landmark of Weifang's cityscape."
4. Nanchang Star – 160 meters
One of the tallest wheels in the world is only 5 meters shorter than its Singapore competitor. But it opened earlier, in 2006.
Each of the 60 cabins, equipped with climate control, can accommodate up to 8 passengers. The attraction is equipped with very beautiful lighting, so in the evening it pleases visitors with fantastic illumination.
A ticket to the "Nanchang Star" will cost only 6 yuan (about 60 rubles). The wheel operates around the clock.
3. "Floating Singapore" - 165 meters
The enormous Ferris wheel, opened in 2008 on the shores of Singapore Bay, offers stunning views of nearby Malaysia and Indonesia. Each of the 28 capsules is the size of a minibus and can accommodate 28 passengers. One rotation of the wheel takes half an hour. And to make the trip more fun, you can order champagne and lunch for two in the cabin.
2. High Roller – 168 meters
The ride, located in the Linq shopping and entertainment district in the famous Las Vegas strip, opened in 2014. Each air-conditioned glass capsule can hold up to 40 passengers. Since this is Vegas, drinks are sold right at the base of the wheel and food can be taken into the capsule. However, there are no slot machines in the capsules, or at least not yet.
Night tickets for the High Roller are more expensive than day tickets, and this is understandable: after all, at night Las Vegas is filled with lights and looks much more beautiful. For a long time, the High Roller held the title of the largest Ferris wheel in the world until it was taken over by the Dubai Eye in 2021.
1. Dubai Eye – 250 meters
The world's tallest observation wheel, located on the man-made Bluewaters Island, is a majestic structure that rotates once every 38 minutes and offers 360-degree panoramas of the Dubai skyline. The attraction is designed to accommodate 1,750 people.
The wheel has 48 air-conditioned and safe cabins with an area of 30 square meters and a capacity of up to 40 people. They are divided into three categories: observation, social and private cabins.
- The observation cabin can be enjoyed throughout the day and night, including a special sunset ride.
- Social cabins have more to offer than just a view. These cabins will have access to a VIP lounge and bar in the center of the capsule. Entry to this capsule is only possible for those over 21 years old and gives free access to two drinks from a special bar.
- Private cabins will cater for events such as birthdays, engagements, weddings, business events or any other special occasion. Reservations are available. Private cabins will also offer a three-course dinner for two turns of the wheel.
