Raising animals is undoubtedly one of the best tools for mental health. They give us a sense of camaraderie and push us out of bed because we know a breathing soul needs us.
People usually own cats and dogs because they are the most common pets we grew up with. However, have you thought about thinking outside the box and discovering other types of animals you can have at home? Since this can be more challenging due to lack of experience, we will introduce you to four types that are easy to handle.
Capybara
Rodents have always been kept as pets because of their compassion and empathy. One unusual species is the South African capybara, which is related to guinea pigs and is considered the largest rodent in the world. They cannot be fully tamed unless you get a very young one to establish a relationship and ensure their loyalty. To be able to raise them properly, you must have an open space where they can run and release their energy. It would be great if you had a water feature as well, as they are semi-aquatic creatures that love to swim. The capybara's diet is simple and cheap, as they love to eat grass and drink plenty of water.
By the way, avoid raising this pet if you have small children because they may be hostile to unexpected movements. Some states do not allow you to have one because it is an exotic pet, so it is best to check the city laws before trying to adopt or buy one.
Glider
The glider is a peculiar pet with a funny name that has gained its popularity due to its excellent communication skills. It is related to the opossum family, but got its name from its ability to glide from one tree to another using a special membrane that connects its front leg and back leg. It is preferable to handle them when they are young to establish a bond that can help you both in the future. On the downside, they are nocturnal animals, so you will have to change your schedule to bond well with a glider.
If you want to raise gliders, you will need a backyard with tall trees to simulate the wild environment they need, as they love to climb and jump from one branch to another. As for the food they eat, you can provide them with eggs, nuts, vegetables, and cooked meat.
Marine aquarium fish
There is no doubt that having an aquarium at home will give the room a colorful and happy atmosphere. It is quite interesting to watch the fish roaming around and growing day by day. If you want to keep exotic species, marine aquariums are the best environment for various fish to thrive. Also, the aquarium should be large and deep so that the fish have enough space to swim, but at the same time, they do not feel trapped in a small space. Fortunately, most species suitable for beginners require almost the same diet, so you will not have to worry about different meals.
If you are a beginner, one of the most beautiful species is the carbine fish, which is easy to care for. All they need is plenty of hiding places to overcome their territorial nature. Another great fish is the firefish, which adds a splash of color to the aquarium with its orange tails. They are friendly and can get along well with any other fish species in the aquarium.
Hedgehogs
Some people have children and still want to have a unique pet that will not harm their little ones. Well, the hedgehog is the best candidate because it is delicate, gentle and friendly. It is very small in size and can live anywhere in the household. However, you need to make sure that you have a cage with a spinning wheel so that the hedgehog can exercise in it whenever it wants.
The hedgehog requires a lot of sleep, so social time is limited to the hours when he wakes up to eat and play a little. It is important to note that you should make sure that you have a vet available to check his weight weekly, especially when he is young.
Serval Cat
There are several exotic cat breeds you can have as a pet, but I think the Serval is one of the best, mainly due to its long lifespan. Although they are known to be a hassle to other animals in the house when raised alone, they can be just as loving and playful as the average house cat… only a LOT more fun.
Kinkajou
I'm not going to lie, I had never heard of a "kinkajou" before I did the research for this article, and yet I found that this little monkey-like creature can be a good pet that can live 25-30 years old with care and proper nutrition. But I also found that they can be a little mischievous.
Skunk
I am lucky enough to live near someone who keeps skunks as pets and I can tell you that they are loving and loyal creatures that she even lets out in the backyard where there is no fence! They come back every time and boy can they be loving, to the point that they will often snuggle up to you out of love! And no, they don't smell at all, in fact, she grooms them a lot because they enjoy it, so they smell great!
Giant African Land Snail
This was my first exotic pet and is still one of my favorites. Snails are boring, slimy creatures, right? Well, yes, they can be a little slimy, but they can also be very funny and surprisingly loving, to the point that they will happily sleep in your hand. Take my word for it, they really are great pets (especially if you start giving them a few beers in the evenings), but they do require a lot of maintenance when it comes to cleaning the tank.
Madagascar hissing cockroach
Bugs aren't for everyone, but they're often overlooked for being a fun, interesting pet. They're certainly exotic and short-lived, but with careful planning and care, you can have a growing hive in a single tank that can last as long as you need it to. Even a single hissing cockroach can be a fun pet, but they don't live very long on their own.
Fennec Fox
The last one on this list might well be the cutest. It looks like a fox, but is the size of a cat and acts like a dog! It is the perfect combination of everything people love about this animal, especially its playful nature. One look at those ears is enough to melt anyone's heart!
Although raising exotic and unique pets can be challenging, it is ultimately quite rewarding. You will get a sense of accomplishment because you have managed to raise and bond with a high-maintenance animal. Once you have earned its loyalty and friendship, you will have a friend for life. However, if you like to keep your distance and have a live aquarium at home, saltwater fish can be a great addition to your living space.
