Every year, residents of our capital think about which coniferous tree to choose for the holiday. You can start choosing a tree 10 days before the New Year 2025 - this is exactly when the capital's Christmas tree markets open. You will immediately recognize them by the signs "Forest Market".
Here you can find fresh spruce or pine trees, as well as other holiday paraphernalia. Counters with cheap products "made in China" are becoming a thing of the past, they are being replaced by handmade toys, Christmas decorations. This year you will again be able to buy spruce trees in a festive atmosphere at the capital's bazaars in Moscow's districts. Find out where the fairs will be held.
Where can I quickly find a Christmas tree in Moscow?
You can visit a Christmas tree retailer and find options for New Year's trees just 10-12 days before New Year's Eve. You can come and choose a coniferous beauty on December 20. On this day, the queues for live pines and firs are not as long as on New Year's Eve. According to statistics, there were many noisy long queues near Christmas tree sellers on December 25-26 last year. It is better not to buy a spruce before the 20th, because the tree may start to shed its leaves by the holiday.
Some places have already opened Christmas tree fairs since mid-December, and artificial trees adorn the squares. Last winter, residents and visitors of the city could buy a fir tree at 284 points of sale throughout the capital's regions. According to the mayor of the capital, there were 212 markets and 72 full-fledged stores that received permission to sell Christmas trees.
This 2024-2025 season, 200 trade zones will be opened. Each bazaar will be decorated in the same festive theme, which was approved by the Moscow Committee for Architecture.
The organization's official page informs people long before the New Year holidays about when the bazaars will be open and at what addresses they will be opened. What you need to know about the official points:
- they are fenced and the shape of the space resembles the configuration of a spruce tree;
- there is a sign "Forest Market" and "Christmas Tree Market";
- stands with information about sellers (full name, legal address, telephone number) are installed on the premises;
- the products have a price tag;
- The sellers have cash registers and documentation permitting the sale of Christmas trees.
Interesting! The Department of Services and Trade suggests that customers ask for price lists and receipts.

Worth knowing! When buying a cut down tree, you need to pay attention to when it was cut down.
This can be assessed by examining the cut on the trunk, which in a fresh tree should be light brown, possibly with visible traces of resin. However, if the trunk is dark brown at the cut, the tree was cut down a few or a few days earlier. As a result, it will, of course, have a shorter service life.

Assortment of Christmas trees
The markets sell needles from the regions, but there are points of sale that sell spruce and pine. Last year, a similar point was opened near GUM and only Danish firs were sold there.
What kind of firs and pines can you see at the markets before the New Year:
- Russian spruce trees grown in nurseries. Such trees come to the capital from the regions. For example, you can buy a spruce from the Saratov or Tambov regions. Their price is within 7 thousand rubles;
- pine trees with fluffy crowns. Their height is not less than 1.5 m. Cost from 4 thousand minimum, price 35 thousand rubles;
- Black pine trees from Crimea. They have a fluffy crown and dark needles. Cost 5 thousand rubles;
- Danish firs. They have soft needles that do not prick your hands. They have a regular cone shape;
- spruce branches are coniferous branches of different sizes. They are also in demand among buyers who create natural decor for the holiday;
- seedlings of coniferous trees. The needles are sold in pots. You can plant them at home or in the country;
- crosses and stands, which are necessary for securing trees at home.
Information! You can also visit the nursery and cut down the spruce you like for a price starting from 500 rubles.
How to choose a good Christmas tree
When choosing a live Christmas tree, you can choose between cut trees (need to be disposed of after Christmas) or coniferous trees planted in a container (with a formed root ball). Potted trees should be moved to a bright, cool place in January. Later, in the spring, the plant is transplanted into the garden.
In both cases, the tree should be watered at least once every 2-3 days - this will extend the life of the needles. A tree in a container should be watered occasionally during storage - before planting. Regardless of its size, the tree should not be placed near a heat source, such as a heater.
The most suitable Christmas trees are:
- European spruce (inexpensive and has a very pleasant smell);
- blue or silver spruce (has silvery-blue or blue-green needles);
- Serbian spruce (with arched lateral branches);
- Caucasian fir (has dark green needles);
- Pine trees are also often used to decorate homes because of their aroma.
If you need to buy a fluffy green spruce, you can buy Caucasian fir. It will last up to 1.5 months in an apartment. It has a lush crown, a regular cone shape, but unfortunately, it has almost no smell. It is cheaper to buy Scots pine at the market. It will last one month at home. Pine has its advantages - it gives off a pleasant resinous aroma.
Vendors selling live trees must have the appropriate documents confirming the legality of their activities. Do not buy trees from an illegal source and do not cut down trees in the forest yourself - this not only threatens a fine, but also contributes to the devastation of forests.
To make a real Christmas tree decorate your apartment and last a long time, choose a freshly cut tree with intensely green, shiny needles. The branches should be flexible and retain their shape even when slightly bent. This is a sign that the juices are still circulating in the plant, so it is fresh enough. The tree should have a beautiful, correct shape and tightly arranged, rigid branches. Do not buy trees with damaged branches, yellowed needles, elongated shoots and too long, unsightly tops.
What to do with the Christmas tree after the holidays?
Firstly, although the tree is biodegradable, decomposes without harming the natural environment, it should not be thrown into the general waste bin. The New Year tree is green, biodegradable waste, and it should be thrown into a container marked "organic", sometimes it is a brown bin. The tree should be without a pot with soil, and it is advisable to cut it into pieces. If this is not possible, then at least cut off the branches.
The tree can be left near the garbage container, rather than thrown into it. Tie the tree parts with twine or pack them in bags. In the first months of the year, discarded Christmas trees will be collected by special services for recycling.
If you have a garden or vegetable garden, the fir tree can be useful as mulch. Mulch can be used around the base of trees or shrubs in the garden. For this purpose, the fir tree will have to be shredded using a device (shredder, grinder) or order the service at a sawmill. Mulch will help to avoid freezing of the ground during frosts, prevent soil erosion during heavy rainfall.
The tradition of organizing Christmas markets dates back to the 13th century. Even at that time, merchants would gather in the main squares of German and Austrian cities offering various goods, not always closely related to the celebration of Christmas. Today, New Year's markets are organized in major cities around the world, including Moscow. In many districts of the capital, you can visit a Christmas tree market to buy pine needles, as well as all the accompanying decorations.
