Idea #1: Orange Candle Holders

During the winter holidays, more than ever, you want romance, warmth and magical coziness. Such an atmosphere is usually created with the help of many candles. But there may not be enough candlesticks for all this beauty, and fire safety is first and foremost. Buying a bunch of candlesticks is also not an option, because they will only be useful a couple of times a year, and you don’t really want to take up extra space. In this case, you can make candlesticks yourself from scrap materials.

Materials: oranges, several small candles in aluminum holders, carnations, pen, sharp knife, spoon, metal star-shaped mold.

Making candlesticks consists of the following steps:

1. It is better to take larger oranges. Use a pen to mark the middle of each fruit and draw a line across.

2. Cut the peel in half with a knife. Carefully remove the halves with a spoon.

3. On one of the halves, which will be the top of the candlestick, make a cutout in the shape of a star with a knife or a metal pastry mold.

4. Decorate the edges of the resulting figure with carnations.

5. Now you can put a candle on the second half and cover it with the top one with the hole.

Idea #2: Volumetric snowflake

We all wait for snow on New Year's Eve. Despite our dislike of the cold, we want snowdrifts during these holidays. After all, winter is not winter if there is no knee-deep snow. We all spent our childhood sledding and diving into snowdrifts, making snowmen.

Of course, snowflakes are irreplaceable in decor, they are the main attribute that should decorate this holiday. But now is the time not to cut out flat snowflakes from napkins for windows, but to add voluminous, elegant snowflakes to your home or office, and it is not cold at all with such "snow" at home. Ordinary paper will do for this.

Materials: multi-colored paper, threads, scissors, glue.

To make a 3D snowflake you will need:

1. Cut the paper into squares. The size of the square determines the size of the snowflake, so you can prepare templates for larger and smaller snowflakes. Snowflakes of different sizes and colors will look even better.

2. The squares need to be folded diagonally and make cuts 1 centimeter wide. Unfold the paper and glue all the strips together, bending them alternately from the center to the edges. To create volume, the strips are glued together alternately, bending them first in one direction, then in the opposite direction.

3. You need six of these parts, and to form a snowflake, you need to connect them together. The inner and lower tails of each segment of the snowflake are fastened.

4. You need to thread a thread through one of the segments and hang the snowflake on a window or a spruce branch.

Idea #3: New Year's composition

New Year's decor consists not only of balls, snowflakes and wreaths, also various compositions perfectly complement the interior, placed on the fireplace, desk or windowsill. They can also be used as gifts to your colleagues and friends.

Materials for the composition: thin plywood, gold and green acrylic paint, glass outliner (stained glass paint), jigsaw, sandpaper, pencil, Christmas tree balls, glue, sponge.

Making the composition:

1. The round base is cut out of plywood with a jigsaw. In the center, you need to cut a hole for attaching the tree trunk.

2. Apply a schematic drawing of a Christmas tree and stars along the contour onto the plywood.

3. Cut the figure along the lines and polish it with sandpaper. You can avoid these steps if you buy ready-made blanks in a craft store.

4. Apply green paint to the tree with a sponge, leaving a relief pattern from the brushstrokes. This way, the handicraft will look more impressive compared to factory-made analogues.

5. The stand, on the other hand, needs to be painted thickly with golden acrylic paint.

6. Use stained glass gold paint to draw the outlines of the cut-out stars.

7. Allow the parts to dry, then coat the joints with glue and connect.

8. To complete the composition, attach a small Christmas ball to the top.

Idea #4: New Year's Sachet

New Year's sachets are a great gift option, and multifunctional. They can be used as a Christmas tree decoration, or spread around the house, in a linen closet, on a windowsill.

The ancient Chinese dried aromatic mixtures of herbs or products after some pleasant and joyful event as a keepsake. The pleasant smell of this thing then reminds of pleasant moments for many years. A very symbolic gift.

Materials for the craft: scissors, thread, pieces of bright fabric, buttons, glue gun, paper, pencil, ribbon, wooden sticks or cinnamon sticks, lace, sachet filling (see below for mix options).

Making a Christmas tree sachet step by step:

1. Draw a schematic of Christmas trees on paper, cut out the templates.

2. Place the templates on the fabric folded in half. Cut out the pieces.

3. Sew the tree elements together in pairs, but leave some space to fill the bags with the mixture. Attach the tree trunk made of a wooden or cinnamon stick after filling.

4. Decorate the tree with lace, ribbons, and button toys to your taste from materials at hand.

Dried flowers and herbs, spice and seed mixtures, and citrus zest can be used as a sachet filler. You can buy all of this either in special shops, at the market in the supermarket, or prepare it yourself in the garden. The collected material should be small, so you need to grind it in a coffee grinder first. Then sift out large particles, so the fragrant pillow will look neater. But the smell of herbs and flowers is very short-lived. To preserve it longer, the mixtures are treated with special concentrators. At home, it is better to use aromatic oil, adding a couple of drops to the mixture and let it brew for three days in a closed container. During this time, the mixture will be saturated with the smell and dry.

After the mixture has dried (otherwise the oil will seep through the fabric and ruin the craft), you can fill the bags. It is not necessary to pour all the collected herbs and spices into the bags. Each tree can be filled with a separate composition, choosing only some of the ingredients. Such a mixture is very symbolic, so depending on the composition of the mixture, it can be a talisman for love, friendship, amulet for the home, etc.

The following mixtures can be prepared as fillers for sachets:

• To attract love.

  Chamomile flowers, tea rose petals and cloves (spice) are mixed in equal proportions.

• For passionate feelings.

  Mix equal parts ginger, lavender herb, yarrow and tea rose.

• New Year's scent.

  3 parts orange zest, 1 part cloves, 1 part cinnamon and 2 parts sage powder.

• Mixture "For good luck".

  4 parts salt, 2 parts dill seeds, 1 part caraway seeds and 1 part flaxseed. This mixture does not need to be ground.

• Mixture "Housing protection".

  4 parts salt, 1 part basil, a pinch of rosemary, 1 part dill seeds, 1 part fennel seeds, ground bay leaf.

• Mixture for good sleep for children.

  1 part rosehip petals, 1 part dried sage, 1 teaspoon dill seeds, 1 part lavender flowers, 1 part chamomile, 1 drop chamomile oil, 1 drop sage oil, 2 drops lemon balm or mint oil.

• Composition for aromatizing linen.

  3 parts lavender flowers, 2 parts tea rose petals and 1 part dried violet root.

• Composition to attract money.

  2 parts cloves, 3 parts patchouli, 1 part cinnamon and 5 parts salt.

• Mixture "New Year's tree".

  5 parts dried pine needles, 2 parts cinnamon, 2 parts orange peels, soaked in a couple of drops of pine oil and orange oil.

• To protect the driver.

  3 parts rosemary, 3 parts juniper, add 1 part each of wormwood and cumin.

Idea #5: Sequined Christmas Ball

On New Year's Eve, we traditionally renew our stock of Christmas tree balls, but from year to year they are the same on store shelves, and designer ones have a very decent price. You can make an original ball with your own hands.

Materials: several foam balls, small decorative nails, sequins, satin ribbons or decorative cords, glue gun.

You can make this craft using this pattern:

1. Collect sequins of different colors.

2. Place sequins on the foam ball, attaching them with nails. Fill the space so that they overlap.

3. When the ball is ready, make a bow from satin ribbon or cord, leaving long tails for attaching to the tree.

4. Attach the bow to the ball using a glue gun.
