In the age of social media, we’ve learned more than ever that celebrities are just like the rest of us, because of course they are. They’re human. Some good, some bad. Some smart, some maybe not so smart. But that’s to be expected. And like the rest of us, celebrities have their own issues with mortality, which can sometimes be quite dramatic.

10. Thomas Edison was almost killed by a flying badger

Thomas Edison will forever be known as a prolific inventor and something of a villain of history. He was accused of some pretty egregious behavior over his infamous feud with Nikola Tesla, not the least of which was electrocuting an elephant. But you can’t argue that he wasn’t an important figure in history, and his legacy is well protected. And to think, none of this would have happened if the badger had been a few inches closer to him when he exploded.

Once upon a time, before he became known as a major inventor, Edison was a train guy. He loved the train. So much so that he not only befriended the train drivers, but got them to agree to possibly the stupidest thing you'll hear all day. They let him ride in a cowshed .

If you're not familiar with all the locomotives, the cattle catcher was a sort of metal broom, a bit like an arrowhead, attached to the front of the train. As the name suggests, it was supposedly used to push cows off the tracks. However, it was mostly used to ward off any potential obstacle, preventing or at least minimizing damage. It was not a seat.

According to Edison, it was a wonderful way to travel, but only for one particular journey. One day, a shepherd did his business and hit what he thought was a badger. As a result, the badger was launched towards the locomotive and struck below the header, near Edison's head, with a " strong force " Edison said he was sitting off to the side, so no harm was done. No doubt if he had hit Edison in the head, the violence would have been much worse.

9. Adam Devine was nearly killed by a cement truck

After spending two weeks in a medically induced coma and undergoing 26 different surgeries over the next few years while learning to walk again, he was fortunately able to not only recover, but also discover his knack for comedy as a way to cope with his situation.

8. Johnny Cash almost got gutted by an ostrich

Johnny Cash was a man with a reputation. They called him the Man in Black and he sang the Folsom Prison Blues. He was tough, gritty, and a real man. He was also nearly carried off by a flightless bird.

In 1981, Cash was at the Money House, his own version of Graceland or Neverland Ranch. It had a recording studio, a museum, and so on. A big celebration of all things Johnny Cash. And, as is customary with celebrities, he had an exotic animal farm. Including ostriches.

According to Cash, a bad winter killed several ostriches. When a hen died, her husband became very angry. Cash was just walking around the area when the ostrich showed up and aggressively confronted him. Nothing came of it, so Cash left. But, according to him, the bird was up to something. On the way back the bird attacked .

If you've ever seen an ostrich attack, you might think it's not as funny as it sounds. It certainly wasn't funny to Cash. Ostriches are basically modern-day velociraptors. Their claws four inches long. Their blow can gut a man , and people needed medical attention because the birds cut through their intestines.

Cash was lucky. The bird's strike broke his lower ribs and the claw cut him from chest to waist. He actually attributes to the belt saving your life and preventing the claw from digging deeper and lower.

7. Black Sabbath nearly pranked their drummer Bill Ward to death

Murray was unable to escape or stand up to breathe as planned. Luckily, Thompson realized at some point that Murray was not in the best condition, so he also saved his life by pulling him out.

4. Dolph Lundgren almost killed Sylvester Stallone on set "Rocky IV".

3. A fan almost killed Frank Zappa during a concert

If you're a fan of Frank Zappa, you may have noticed a noticeable difference between his early and later recordings. His voice had changed, and it was a direct result of a sudden attack that occurred while Zappa was on stage in 1971.

A man named Trevor Charles Howell rushed the stage and pushed Zappa into the concrete orchestra pit. The fall was catastrophic, and people actually thought Zappa was dead. His twisted body was bent at awkward angles, neck broken . His arm was paralyzed, he was bleeding from multiple wounds, his bones were broken. The reason? Howell's girlfriend was in love with Zappa .
